Akshaya Patra Centralized Kitchen in Hubli for Mid Day Meal

A centralized model is one where all the cooking activities of a particular location are concentrated within one large kitchen.

Each centralized kitchen has the capacity to cook between 50 000 to 150 000 meals daily thus achieving economies of scale. Cooking takes place in mechanized, steam heated cauldrons custom built to reduce the cook to consume time.

Mechanization has also helped us meet the highest standards of hygiene by minimizing human handling of food. Freshly cooked food is packed in stainless steel containers and transported to various schools in custom built vehicles (about 10 to 15 schools per vehicle). Security personnel escort each vehicle to ensure safe delivery of meals. There are two types of menus prepared throughout the country: North Indian and South Indian. The North Indian menu consists of three items: roti, sabji and rice while the South Indian menu also consists of rice, sambar and curd.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation completed 11 years of serving mid-day meals to children in government schools, as an implementing partner of the central and state government. 11th November is always a special day for Akshaya Patra, for it was on this day 11 years ago, that the Foundation began to feed 1500 school children from 5 schools in Bangalore.

Commissioner for Women and Child Welfare visits Akshaya Patra facility

Anita Rajendra, Commissioner for Women and child welfare department visited Akshaya Patra foundation recently to check the implementation of the program in Visakhapatanam.

Anasuya, Regional Deputy Director, Kameshwaramma, Project Director and Y Sunanda, Anganwadi Supervisor accompanied her during her visit.

The Women and Child Welfare Department has also shared the impact study report on Anganwadi centers after the introduction of Akshaya Patra.

The impact study shows that there is an improvement in the performance of students and there is an increase in the number of attendees for the spot feeding program for pregnant women and lactating mothers.

Akshaya Patra nutritional program was introduced on 03-01-2011 on experimental basis and was inaugurated by the Honorable Minister for Tribal welfare Sri.Pasupuleti Bala Raju. Currently Akshaya Patra caters 5 varieties of food from 10.30 am at Anganwadi centers.

Dr. A. P. J Abdul Kalam , the Former President of India visited the Akshaya Patra foundation at Bangalore on June 7, 2003 to inaugurate the Kids for Kids scheme.

“When I entered the divine, beautiful temple, I turned to Swami Madhu Pandit Dasa and appreciated his power to spread the message and particularly giving food under the Akshaya Patra program”, said Dr. A.P.J during his visit to the facility.
