The Akshaya Patra Foundation came up with this figure by first calculating what it costs to feed a child for a single day. The total cost per meal to feed a child per day is Rs 7.40. From this amount, Akshaya Patra receives a Government subsidy in grain and grant of Rs 4.38, while Akshaya Patra provides the amount of Rs 3.01 by raising funds.
The Akshaya Patra kitchens operate 232 days in a year. Therefore the total cost of feeding one child over 232 days becomes Rs 698.32. However, in addition to this amount, other variable factors must be added such as inflation in costs. The organisation takes an estimated value based on the rise in prices, which is added on to the yearly cost of food per person. This amount is taken usually at the rate of 7.5 per cent of the cost, which adds up to Rs 52. All these factors together bring us to the total amount of Rs 750.
With this small amount of just Rs 750, one lucky child will be fed a tasty, nutritious meal, on every school day for an entire year. If every responsible person in India were to adopt one child, to pay for their food through their school years, thereby gifting them an education, India’s future will be very bright indeed.
