Smriti Irani visits Akshaya Patra Beneficiary School

Smriti Irani, who was recently appointed to the position of Union Minister of Human Resource Development, visited the Kudasan Primary School, Gandhinagar, one of The Akshaya Patra Foundation’s beneficiary schools. While she was there she participated in the school admissions process and helped distribute books, uniforms and school bags to the school children.

To commemorate her visit, a small welcome ceremony was conducted at which time she spoke on the need to educate girl children and ensure their safety, and the need for women empowerment etc.  During the ceremony she was presented with the Akshaya Patra quality manual and was given a brief description of the kitchen operations. Smriti Irani then spent some time with the children and enjoyed the Akshaya Patra mid-day meal with them, making special mention of the good quality and quantity of food provided to the children every day.

Smriti Irani is well known for her role in Indian politics. She has also been known for her participation in mainstream Indian television and has featured on talk shows and programmes that focus on social issues. In 2003 she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to become the Vice President of the Maharashtra Youth Wing within a year. As her political career gained momentum, she became the National Secretary of the BJP in 2010, and then was sworn in as a Member of Parliament from Gujarat to the Rajya Sabha. Now at the age of 38, Smriti Irani is the youngest member among the Cabinet Ministers.
